Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the effect of cosmetically tinted soft contact lenses on visual function, we evaluated the visual function before and after wearing the tinted lens with various sizes of color free optical zone.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea

Methods:

A prospective, comparative study. In 30 eyes of 30 subjects, corrected visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and pupil size were measured under photopic and mesopic conditions and ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were analyzed before and after wearing the tinted soft contact lenses with different diameters of color free optical zone (4, 5, and 6 mm). Contrast sensitivity was determined at five spatial frequencies (1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 18 cycles/degree [cpd]) using the Optec 6500 vision testing system (StereoOptical Co., Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Pupil size was measured using NeurOptics PLR-200 pupillometer (NeurOptics, Inc.) and ocular HOAs were analyzed using a laser ray tracing aberrometer, iTace (Tracey Technologies, Houston, TX, USA ).

Results:

All tinted contact lens with different diameters of color free optical zone (4, 5, and 6 mm) induced significant vision fluctuation. Corrected visual acuity decreased under mesopic condition from 1.2 ± 0.13 to 0.9 ± 0.23 with 4 mm color free optical zone tinted lens. Mesopic contrast sensitivities with and without glare were reduced and especially, tinted lens with 4 mm clear zone caused the most significant decrease. HOAs significantly increased with wearing the same lens. The changes in contrast sensitivity and total HOA after wearing the lens showed a significant correlation with mesopic pupil size and especially a difference between mesopic pupil size and diameter of color free optical zone.

Conclusions:

Cosmetically tinted contact lenses caused the decrease in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity and induce HOAs, especially under the mesopic condition. The impaired visual function was related to pupil size of mesopic condition and color free optical zone diameter of the tinted lens. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
