Epidemiology of pediatric ocular trauma in the Egyptian Delta region

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To detect the prevalence of ocular trauma in children at Delta region in Egypt .The different causes , the clinical presentation and the visual outcome of pediatric ocular trauma.

Setting:

Delta Region,Egypt

Methods:

This is a prospective randomised study included all children with ocular trauma admitted to the Ophthalmology Department ,Tanta University hospital between January and June 2013.The demographic data of the children were included as regard ; age, sex ,laterality also type of trauma ,the site of injury, the period between the date of trauma and that of admission ,the circumstances of the trauma incidence and the visual outcome .

Results:

One hundred and three children were included. The majority of injuries occurred in male children (71%). The highest proportion of injuries occurred was domestic in (47.8%) followed by the outhouse in (37.2%) . The most common causative agents were wood, stones, bottles and other blunt instruments (34.5%). Open globe injuries accounted for 69% of injuries, closed globe for 16.5% , adenexal trauma 14.5%. most cases required surgical management (86.4%).Visual outcome showed that 35.4% had No or mild visual impairment , 36.6% had moderate visual impairment and 28% were legally blind ( ≤ 6/60) .Type of injury, anatomical location of the wound and posterior segment affection has impacted on final visual outcome.

Conclusions:

Ocular trauma is prevalent among children at the Delta region and it carries a high risk of visual affection in relation to type ,site of the ocular injury and the time of seeking medical advice. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
