Eyelid pilomatrixoma: a description of 5 cases

Purpose:

We present 5 patients and review the clinical and histopathologic features of pilomatrixoma of the eyelids and eyebrows

Setting:

Istanbul Education and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon, benign, calcified adnexal tumor, which originates from matrix of hair follicles. It is also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe. It is usually seen at the first and second decades of the life. Pilomatrixoma is usually localised on head, neck and upper extremites.. Pilomatrixoma is often misdiagnosed clinically and the correct diagnosis can be established only after excision and histological examination .We present 5 patients and review the clinical and histopathologic features of pilomatrixoma of the eyelids and eyebrows . From 2010-2013, diagnosis of eyelid pilomatrixoma was performed in 5 patients . The mean age at presentation was 34 years. Each of our 5 patients had a single tumor, 4 on the upper eyelid and 1 on the eyebrow.

Results:

No tumor recurrence has mean noted at 11 months . Pathologic diagnosis of pilomatrixoma is based on the finding of large masses of shadow cells, combined with basophilic cells, inflamation, calcification, ossification. We report 4 cases of eyelid pilomotrixoma that were treated in our department.

Conclusions:

The consequences of variation pilomatrixoma are clinical diagnostic errors. The one, sure and reliable criterion is a histopathology evaluation. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
