Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety, efficacy and predictability of myopic wavefront-guided with both techniques, LASIK and PKR, using the new generation S4 IR excimer laser platform (Visx)

Setting:

Bordeaux Hospital University, Refractive surgery department

Methods:

This study includes 149 myopic eyes of 77 patients prospectively treated by wavefront-guided excimer laser with either PRK or LASIK procedure based on the preoperative screening evaluation: 104 eyes underwent a LASIK procedure and 45 eyes underwent a PRK. All eyes were treated using the S4 excimer laser and Fourier treatment tables generated from the iDesign wavefront system (Abbott Medical Optics). Mean spherical equivalent (MRSE), uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and percentage of eyes within 0.5D of the intended refraction were analyzed at 3 months postoperatively

Results:

Mean patient age was 30,6 +/-9,9 years (22 - 59 years) and 30,2 +/-7,7 years (21 -57 years) respectively in the LASIK and PRK group. Mean preoperative manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was significantly lower in the PRK group than in the LASIK group (p< 0.01) with -2,23 +/- 1,31 D (-5; +1D) and -4,05 +/- 1,62 D (-2; -6,5D), respectively. At 3 months postoperative, 95% of eyes were within 0.5D of the targeted refraction in both groups (100% and 95.5%, respectively for LASIK and PRK). The postoperative MRSE was -0.16 +/- 0.45 D (0 to -1,5D) with uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of 20/20 or better achieved in 94.4% of eyes in the LASIK group. In the PRK group, the postoperative MRSE was -0.04 +/- 0.2 D (0; -1,25D) with an UCVA of 20/20 or better achieved in 95,5% of eyes.

Conclusions:

The early postoperative clinical results of wavefront-guided LASIK and PRK for low to moderate myopia using the new generation S4IR excimer platform were safe, highly effective and predictable FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
