Small incision lenticule extraction for 6 months results and predictors

Purpose:

To report our experience with small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for the treatment of myopia

Setting:

Onnuri eye hospital, Jeonju, Korea

Methods:

447 eyes of 224 patients with myopia with and without astigmatism treated with SMILE and followed for 6 months.

Results:

The mean spherical equivalent was -6.75 diopters(D) ± 1.65(SD) preoperatively and -0.21 ± 0.37D 6 months postoperatively. 97.9% were within the ±1.0 D and 86.1 % were within ±0.5D of intended correction. 97.6% obtained uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) <0.10 logMar(20/25 or better snellen equivalent) at 6 month. 48.5% remained unchanged, 41% gained one line, 7.2% gained two lines of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), 3.3% lost one line and just 0.3% (one eye) lost two or more lines. Age was the only predictor worsening UDVA at 6 months postoperatively in multiple linear regression analyses (decrease of 0.07 logMar per increasing decade of age. P<0.05). There was no predictor showing association with error in spherical equivalent refraction at 6 months postoperatively. The smaller incision the group had, the more percentages of eyes represented a 20/20 or better UDVA on the first day postoperatively (pearson's chi-square, p<0.05).

Conclusions:

SMILE is very effective and safe refractive surgery. Faster visual recovery is also expected by optimization of laser settings and improving surgical techniques. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
