Post-IntraLase retinal image quality at different accommodative demands

Purpose:

To use computer simulation in order to assess the quality of the retinal image in subjects who underwent Intralase surgery at different accommodative demands and to compare the image quality before and after the surgery.

Setting:

University of Valencia, Spain

Methods:

Computer simulations were obtained for two different scenarios: before and after the subjects had the surgery. In order to achieve this, Zernike coefficients from the wavefront aberrations of 24 subjects before and after they underwent Intralase surgery were used. Then, two different accommodative demands (2 and 4 D), each one for two different pupil diameters (4 and 6 mm), were simulated modifying the spherical aberration according to previous studies. Finally, for each condition, the Point Spread Function (PSF), the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and examples of retinal images using targets with different spatial frequency content were computed and analyzed. Matlab (Mathworks Inc.) was used to perform all the numerical calculations.

Results:

The different retinal image simulations showed how a particular target is seen by a subject before and after undergoing Intralase surgery, while an accommodative demand exists. Differences in the PSF and in the MTF were found between pre-Intralase and post-Intralase simulations. Regarding the retinal images, slight differences were also found. All these metrics also changed between the different conditions (i.e. accommodative demands and pupil diameters

Conclusions:

In this study, as far as the image quality metrics is concerned, differences were found between pre-Intralase and post-Intralase simulations and under different accommodative demands and pupil diameters. The magnitude of the differences increased with greater accommodative demands. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
