Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in thick corneas > 600µm.
Setting:
Sohag Refractive surgery center, Egypt
Methods:
This study retrospectively reviewed the charts of 53 patients (96 eyes) with corneal thickness of >600 µm that have undergone LASIK in Sohag refractive surgery center, Egypt from the period of January 2011 to January 2014. The main outcome was best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and post operative spherical equivalence (SE).
Results:
The eyes were classified into 2 groups; Group 1 : myopic eyes :42 eyes; Group 2: hyperopic eyes: 54 eyes. Mean Corneal thickness was 610 ± 12µm in group 1 and 623 ± 20 µm in group 2. BCVA in group 1 was 0.1± 0.2 and 0.02 ± 0.4 in group 2 (p=0.042). The post operative SE was -0.6 ± 1.2 in group 1 and +0.9 ±1.11 in group 2.
Conclusions:
LASIK yields satisfactory results in thick cornea yet more efficient in hyperopic eyes than in myopic eyes FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
