Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare change in asphericity and other high order aberration in Custom-Q vs Wavefront optimized (WFO) LASIK ablation profile patients in Asian population

Setting:

Prospective, randomized, eye to eye study in refractive center

Methods:

Utilizing our latest WaveLight®EX500 Excimer Laser (Alcon, Inc, Switzerland), a total of 62 eyes of 31 patients with myopia with or without astigmatism were randomized to receive Custom Q or WFO LASIK ablation treatment in the dominant eye, the fellow non-dominant eye received the alternate ablation procedure. LASIK flaps were created using the 150-kHz IntraLase iFS (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA). Main outcome measure parameter included, residual refractive error, UCDVA, Contrast sensitivity, Q-value asphericity, High order aberrations (HOAs) and subjective patient optic quality questionnaire.

Results:

The custom Q ablation group comprised of mean SE of -5.32 diopter (D) and the WFO ablation group comprise of mean SE of -5.41 diopter (D), their frequency with which Custom-Q and WFO achieved postoperative UCDVA were not statistically different from each other (P> 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in contrast sensitivity, astigmatism, coma, trefoil. However, the change of spherical aberration was notice to be higher in WFO ablation profile. Patient questionnaire show a mild preference of Custom-Q over WFO.

Conclusions:

Custom-Q and WFO LASIK provided similar result in myopic refractive correction, and achieved post op UCDVA, contrast sensitivity, but Custom-Q produce less changes in asphericity, less HOA changes and a marginal preference by Asian patients for optic quality. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
