Comparison of early outcomes of photorefractive keratectomy between Allegretto Wavelight (AW) and SCHWIND Amaris (SA) refractive lasers

Purpose:

Rapid recovery of functional vision after surgery is important in patient acceptance of PRK. We aimed to compare the early outcomes of patients undergoing (TE), PRK with two laser platforms, Allegretto Wavelight (AW) and Schwind Amaris (SA)

Setting:

Private Laser Refractive Clinic

Methods:

Retrospective Comparative Case Series . 46 consecutive cases of trans-epithelial (TE) PRK with the SA laser were each matched with two AW cases of the closest prescription. Outcomes of uncorrected visual acuities (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuities (BSCVA) were analyzed at 1, 3 and 6 months. Ocular scatter index (OSI) and topography compared at each data point

Results:

At one month, cases achieved 20/20 UCVA were 10 of 46 (22%) eyes treated with SA PRK compared to 53 of 92 (58%) with WA PRK (p=0.0285). 20/20 BSCVA were 17 of 46 (37%) eyes with SA PRK compared to 68 of 92 (74%) WA PRK. 20/40 or better UCVA were 43 of 46 (93%) eyes compared to 90 of 92 (98%) eyes relatively.

Conclusions:

TE PRK with the Allegretto Wavelight laser achieves significantly more rapid recovery of functional vision than the Schwind Amaris with only 22% of eyes achieving 20/20 UVA at one month compared to 58% of eyes treated with the Allegretto Wavelight (p≤0.05). Ocular scatter index (OSI) was trended to be higher with AS than AW non-significantly. By 3 months UVA and ocular scatter were similar in both groups. We suggest that the delay in recovery with the SA is related to beam profile differences between the lasers FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
