Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study is to compare patients' comfort, efficacy and safeness of laser treatment of low and moderate myopia using EBK and Epi-LASIK procedures.
Setting:
1. Ophthalmology Department Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education Warsaw , Poland
2. Opththalmology Departament Medical University of Warsaw, Poland
3. Microsurgery Eye Centre „LASER', Warsaw, Poland
Methods:
• 51 patients (31 women and 20 men) between 21 and 35 years of age, with spherical equivalent from -1,5D to - 6,75D (average -4,35D) were included to the study.
• One eye (right) was treated with EBK technique and the second eye (left) with Epi-LASIK.
• The standard laser ablation (ASA) was performed using Eximer laser - MEL 80 (Zeiss)
• In all cases the mitomycin C was applied after laser ablation.
• The therapeutic contact lens was placed on the end of surgery as a routine.
• Visual acuity was examined before the surgery and at the following intervals of one week (after removal of contact lens) and one month, 3 and 6 months.
• Time of reepithelialization, Confoscan images and patients' satisfaction were analyzed.
Results:
• Preoperative BCVA was from 0,7 to 1,0 in all eyes.
• BCVA after contact lens removal was from 0,7-1,0. BCVA at 3 and 6 months after surgery was 0,9-1,0.
• Postoperative spherical equivalent was comparable in both group from
• +0,5 D to -0,75D (average: -0,19 D)
• There were no statistical significant differences in postoperative BCVA between both groups.
• The reepithelialization time was slightly shorter in EBK group but without statistical significance.
• At the time of surgery patients complained about little discomfort during Epi-Lasik ring suction.
• Small to moderate subconjunctival hemorrhages were observed in 17/51 eyes after Epi-Lasik.
• Patients' satisfaction was greater in EBK group.
Conclusions:
1. EBK and Epi-Lasik procedures are safe and efficacious methods of treatment of low and moderate myopia
2. EBK procedure was found as a slightly more comfortable comparing to Epi-Lasik. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
