Evaluation of aberrometric outcomes after LASIK surgery using iDesign system for treatment planning in myopic eyes

Purpose:
To evaluate the aberrometric change in myopic eyes undergoing LASIK surgery using iDesign excimer laser platform from Abbot Medical Optics and the IntraLase platform for the flap creation.

Dunya Eye Hospital, İstanbul
Methods:
58 myopic eyes with and without astigmatism mean spherical manifest refraction -2.71±2.23D (-6.50 to 0.75D) mean cylinder manifest refraction -1.26±1.10D (-4.00 to 0.00D) were enrolled to receive wavefront guided LASIK with the Star S4IR excimer laser, the iDesign system was used for treatment planning and the iFS femtosecond laser was used for flap cutting. High order aberration (HOA) RMS and spherical aberration were measured preoperatively and three months after the surgery for a 5 mm (32 eyes) and 6 mm (26 eyes) pupil size with the iDesign aberrometer.
Results:
32 eyes were evaluated after 3 months. 100% of eyes had a spherical equivalent manifest refraction between ±0,50 D. Postoperatively in 97 % of the eyes, the Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) was 1,0 or better (Snellen Acuity Chart) and 65% achieved an UCVA of 1.2 or better. After three months there wasn't a statistically significant change the HOA RMS for 5 mm pupil size (p:0,44), and 6 mm pupil size (p:0,08) with respect to the preoperative values. There was insignificant change of spherical abberation (p>0,05) for 5 mm and 6 mm pupil diameter when comparing preoperative to postoerative values.
Conclusions:
Wavefront guided excimer treatment using the new iDesign System to calculate the ablation profile was found effective, safe and predictable. There was not a statistically significant induction of HOA and Spherical abaerrations for 5mm or 6mm pupil sizes three months after treatment. Although the statistics were significant we would like to see the behaviour of HOA and spherical aberration in a larger sample .
