Abstract Details
Purpose:
Prospective clinical study on the safety and efficacy of a new LASIK-based procedure for myopic presbyopes.
Setting:
Asian Eye Institute, Philippines
Methods:
A single surgeon investigation where 35 presbyopic myopes undergo a LASIK procedure for treating presbyopia. The LASIK-based procedure is performed on the Technolas 217P excimer laser (Bausch + Lomb Technolas) using the Supracor treatment algorithm. The target mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) is -0.5D. Patient follow-up is at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 and 6 months. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity was assessed at distance, intermediate and near vision. A subjective patient questionnaire was also conducted.
Results:
To-date, 18 patients have undergone the procedure. Mean patient age is 50.3 years. Pre-operative mean sphere, cylinder and spherical equivalent are -3.58±1.10D, -0.61±0.46D and -3.89±1.23D. At 3 months post-op, the sphere, cylinder and spherical equivalent are -0.18±0.37D, -0.45±0.29D and -0.41±0.383D. 73% patients have monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/25, 73% patients have monocular intermediate and near visual acuity of 20/20. No patient lost more than 1 line of monocular best corrected visual acuity. Binocular results find 87% have uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20, 100% patients have uncorrected intermediate visual acuity of 20/20 and 87.5% patients have uncorrected near visual acuity of 20/20. The patient questionnaire found all patients could read the newspaper and 87.5% could read package inserts and phone text messages. 87.5% would recommend the surgery to a friend. Further 6 month follow-up data will be presented.
Conclusions:
Initial outcomes find the supracor LASIK procedure provides improvement in visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near vision for myopic presbyopes. Further longer term follow-up on a larger patient group is required to confirm these findings.
