Abstract Details

Purpose:

Study the effect of Ortho-K RGP lenses for myopia control and reduction in Childhood.

Setting:

Nour ALHaya Eye Center

Methods:

42 eyes for 22 patients 12 males and 10 Females, young myopic subjects, who ranged in age from 9 to 17, their subjective refraction ranged from - 1.25D to - 4.25D ,Astigmatism of less than - 2.00 D, all subjects were fitted with E and E OK RGPLenses ( FDA approved Boston XO DK100 material), all subjects wore the lenses overnight for 8-12 hrs and removed them during the day for 36 months. we performed, VA, retinoscopy examination, subjective refraction, spherical equivalent refractive errors (SER), and corneal topography using Orbscan2 and Pentacam, before , one week after fitting, then assessment of the VA and subjective refraction every 6 months compared the rates of change with 22 children wearing single-vision spectacles from an earlier study (control).

Results:

The residual SER at the end of the study was -0.21 +/- 0.69 D (dioptre) and the reduction (less myopic) in SER was 2.12 +/- 1.33 D (all values are mean +/- SD). At the end of 36 months day, corneal topography show central corneal flattening matching with the reduction of myopia. All the ortho-k subjects found post-ortho-k unaided vision acceptable in the day time., the increases in SER were 0.73 +/- 0.27 Diopters and 1.54 +/- 0.53 Diopters for the ortho-k and control groups, respectively.

Conclusions:

Ortho-K is a non-surgical process which reshapes (flattens) the cornea using reverse geometry RGP lenses, If the amount of corneal flattening is accurately controlled, it is possible to bring the eye into correct focus and compensate for myopia. It is an effective method for reduction of the progression of myopia in childhood (preventive/control effect). However, there are substantial variations in changes in eye length among children and there is no way to predict the effect for individual subjects. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
