Clinical outcomes of optimized prolate ablation procedure for the treatment of myopic regression after LASIK surgery

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the clinical efficacy of optimized prolate ablation procedure for the treatment of myopic regression after LASIK surgery.
Setting:
Private practice, Busan, South Korea.
Methods:
Seventeen eyes of 17 patients who underwent optimized prolate ablation for the treatment of myopic regression after LASIK surgery were included. Preoperative and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperative measurements of uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction values (sphere, cylinder, and spherical equivalent), point spread function (PSF), corneal asphericity (Q value), and corneal haze were performed. Also, ocular aberrations were measured using the NIDEK OPD Scan III topography wavefront aberrometry (NIDEK Co Ltd, Gamagori, Japan) with the pupils dilated to at least 6.0 mm, before and after 1, 3, and 6 months of surgery. Linear mixed model analysis was performed to detect any possible differences between time courses.
Results:
CDVA significantly increased at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively, compared with preoperative CDVA. Sphere and spherical equivalent decreased postoperatively, compared with preoperative each value. Ocular spherical aberration (SA) and corneal SA decreased at 1, 3, and 6 months, and total coma aberration decreased at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. PSF increased at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. However, high-order aberration, total trefoil, Q value, and corneal haze did not change significantly postoperatively.
Conclusions:
For the treatment of myopic regression after LASIK surgery, optimized prolate ablation procedure would be effective in terms of increasing visual acuity and decreasing ocular aberration. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
