Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual and refractive outcomes after bilateral implantation of 1 of 3 multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL), considering distance, near and intermediate vision.

Setting:

BMI Southend Private Hospital

Methods:

This study comprised patients who had bilateral implantation of either the AT LISA Trifocal IOL, the Lentis Mplus IOL or the PhysIOL FineVision after phacoemulsification 6 months previously. The main outcome measures were Uncorrected (UDVA) and Best Corrected (BCVA) measured in LogMAR. Near Visual Acuity (NVA) and Intermediate Visual Acuity (IVA) were measured in LogRAD using the Radner reading charts and reading speed was also assessed. Preferred working distance and reading range were measured. Standardised lighting levels were used throughout.

Results:

30 patients (60 eyes) were included. 10 patients implanted with PhysIOL FineVIsion, 10 with the Lentis Mplus and 10 patients with AT LISA Trifocal. At 6 months post-operative, the FineVision group had Mean Spherical refraction was 0.28DS ± 0.33 (SD) and astigmatic refraction was -0.30DC±0.19(SD).Mean UDVA was 0.09LogMAR ±0.09 and BCDVA was 0.00 LogMAR±0.08. Near and Intermediate Visual Acuity mean values were 0.13 and 0.40 respectively. Preferred Reading distance was 34.5cms and mean range was 23.3 to 50.7cms. The Lentis Mplus group had Mean Spherical refraction was 0.37DS ± 0.28 (SD) and astigmatic refraction was -0.43DC±0.26(SD).Mean UDVA was 0.08LogMAR ±0.08 and BCDVA was 0.02 LogMAR±0.08. Near and Intermediate Visual Acuity mean values were 0.17 and 0.40 respectively. Preferred Reading distance was 41cm and mean range was 24.5 to 57.5cms The AT LISA group had Mean Spherical refraction of 0.42DS ± 0.12 (SD) and astigmatic refraction was -0.50DC±0.23(SD). Mean UDVA was 0.02LogMAR ±0.05 and BCDVA was -0.06LogMAR±0.03. Near and Intermediate Visual Acuity mean values were 0.14 and 0.40 respectively. Preferred Reading distance was 31.5cms and mean range was 23.5 to 47.5cms.

Conclusions:

Post operative visual acuity was good at distance, intermediate and near with all IOL models, but there is no significant difference between the lenses in visual acuity measures. No patients had Refraction of more than 1.00DS post op and no spectacles were used by any of the patients. The Lentis Mplus group had a longer preferred reading distance and increased range of reading distance. This explains the good intermediate visual acuity achieved although the lens is a bifocal. The Lentis Mplus Bifocal IOL provides as good intermediate vision as the Trifocal intraocular lenses in this small study. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
