Biofilm formation by staphylococcus epidermidis on hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens material

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To investigate biofilm formation by Staphylococcus epidermidis on different intraocular lenses (IOL).

Setting:

Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Microbiology

Methods:

The icaA , icaD and bap positive S. epidermidis KA 15.8 and icaA , icaD and bap negative S. epidermidis KA 14.5 were used. Biofilms were cultivated on disks of different IOL materials: PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) and 2 different types hydrophobic acrylic. Lenses were contaminated with S. epidermidis solutions containing 107 colony-forming units. IOLs were inoculated into plate containing 0.25% glucose tryptic soy broth and incubated 24h at 37C. Biofilms were stained with crystal violet which served as an index of biofilm formation. The bacterial population was enumerated after biofilm homogenization. Biofilms were also examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Results:

The 4 diffrerent lenses were tested, the least amount of biofilm formed on hydrophobic acrylic. Biofilm production and bacterial populations were different between lenses. It was noticed that on SEM images; there was a single layer of biofilm on hydrophobic lenses; however on PMMA lenses it was multilayer.

Conclusions:

S. epidermidis produced intense biofilm on hydrophobic intraocular lenses. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
