Pre- and postoperative comparison of straylight between clear IOL and photochromic IOL

Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study is to find out if differences in quality of vision between clear IOL insered patients and photochromic IOL inserted patients are excist by comparing Pre- and postoperative visual acuity and straylight under dim light. Straylight means scattered light due to intraocular media, and can reduce visual sensitivity
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, The Catholic University of Korea St. Mary's Hospital, Seoul, Korea
Patients awaiting cataract surgery at St. Mary's Hospital between December 2011 and December 2012 were recruited for the study.
Methods:
The base for examinations is C-quant(Oculus GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany), which can measure straylight.
Two groups including who were inserted clear IOL(Akreos AO MI60, Bausch&Lomb, USA) or photochromic IOL(Matrix Aurium No.404. Medennium Inc.. USA) during cataract surgery measured visual acuity and straylight before surgery, post-1month and 2month after surgery in dim light.
Results:
There was no significant visual acuity difference in dim light after surgery between two groups. Also there was no significant difference in post-1month and post 2-month straylight.
Conclusions:
In the case of pseudophakic patient, ultraviolet ray and blue light can make phototoxicity. Photochromic IOL was developed, but some study assumed polymers of photochromic IOL could affect light scattering.
By measuring straylight in dim light using C-quant, we found no significant difference of light-scattering between clear IOL and photochromic IOL..
Photochromic IOL can be a good choice for patients who spend a long time in a dark circumference. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
