Influences of cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1% and tropicamide 1% on anterior segment parameters with Pentacam in adults

Purpose:

To investigate the effects of cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1% on the main numerical parameters of anterior segment with Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera in adults.

Setting:

Akdeniz University Hospital Ophthalmology Department

Methods:

Pentacam measurements of 42 eyes of 21 adults (>18 year-age) before (group 1), after 45 min of cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1% (group 2) and after 45 min of tropicamide 1% (group 3) instillation were performed and compared with each other. For comparison of the test parameters, paired t-test in the groups and unpaired t-test in between the groups were used.

Results:

Mean ages in the study were 29,47 (range 18 and 40 years). Measurements between group 1 and group 2 were significantly different for the parameters of anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber volume (ACV) (P<0.05). Measurements between group 1 and group 3 were also significantly different for the parameters of ACD and ACV (P<0.05). Measurements between group 2 and group 3 were similar for the same parameters (P>0.05). Central corneal thickness (CCT) were similar in all groups.

Conclusions:

ACD and ACV are the important refractive parameters that increase significantly after cycloplegia (both of after cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1% and tropicamide 1%). Effects of cycloplegia on these parameters for Pentacam measurements should be regarded for proper clinical interpretation in adults, such as refractive procedures and intraocular lens power measurements.
