Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study is to evaluate alterations in anterior chamber and angle parameters measured by means of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) after phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and compare changes between hydrophilic and hydrophobic IOLs.
Setting:
2nd Department of Ophthalmology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 'Papageorgiou' General Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece
Methods:
In a prospective randomized clinical trial, 40 eyes of 40 patients undergoing uneventful cataract surgery by means of phacoemulsification were enrolled. All subjects were randomly assigned to 2 equal groups in order to receive either a hydrophilic or hydrophobic IOL. Anterior chamber depth and angle parameters were measured using Visante AS-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, USA) preoperatively, 1 week and one month after phacoemulsification. Anterior chamber depth (ACD), angle width (AW), angle opening distance (AOD) and trabecular iris space area (TISA) at 500μm and 750μm distance from the scleral spur were recorded and used for the analysis.
Results:
A statistically significant increase was noted in every anterior chamber parameter in all measures after phacoemulsification and IOL implantation (p<0.001). ACD raised from 2,83±0,24mm preoperatively to 3,81±0,26mm one month post surgery, while AW increased from 41,2±8,6° to 53,6±7,1° and from 39,2±11,2° to 52,6±8,7° in the nasal and temporal quadrant respectively. AOD500, AOD750, TISA500 and TISA750 demonstrated a statistically significant raise (p<0.0001) in both groups. No statistically significant difference was noted between IOL groups.
Conclusions:
Changes in angle and anterior chamber morphology after uneventful cataract surgery can be imaged and objectively quantified by anterior segment OCT. Deepening of the anterior chamber and widening of the nasal and temporal angles occurs, independently of the IOL being implanted. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
