Evaluation of central corneal thickness in patients with diabetes mellitus

Purpose:

To evaluate the central corneal thickness (CCT) and its association with clinical parameters in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).

Setting:

Sincan State Hospital, Ankara/Turkey.

Methods:

Thirty eyes of 30 diabetic patients and 30 eyes of 30 control subjects were enrolled in this study. Diabetic patients and control group were compared in terms of CCT measured with ultrasound pachymeter. The effects of age, sex, blood glucose concentration, percentage of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and duration of DM on CCT were also evaluated.

Results:

The mean CCT was found as 543.97±32.45µm in patients with DM; 533.54±24.75µm in healthy control group. The difference between diabetic and healthy subjects was significant (p<0,005). CCT was correlated with HbA1c (r=0.687, P<0.01) and weakly correlated with blood glucose (r=0.378, P=0.045). Multiple regression analysis assessing the effects of age, sex, blood glucose concentration, HbA1c, presence of diabetic retinopathy, and duration of DM on CCT revealed that HbA1c value was the only important factor associated with CCT.

Conclusions:

We found that diabetic patients had an increased CCT when compared with healthy subjects. The increment in CCT is related wtih HbA1c value in diabetic patients. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
