The effect of age on the assessment of anterior chamber depth after myopic LASIK with the IOLMaster and Orbscan IIz

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To assess anterior chamber depth (ACD) before and after myopic Lasik in different age groups with the IOL master and Orbscan IIz.

Setting:

Private Practice, Canada

Methods:

99 eyes were assessed preoperatively, 1 and 3 months after LASIK in 2 age groups (≤ 40 and > 40years). ACD was measured from the epithelium with the IOL master and endothelium with the Orbscan IIz.

Results:

Mean (SD) spherical equivalent before Lasik was - 4.05 (0.13) D. After Lasik, significant decreases in ACD were detected with the IOL master at 1 and 3 months in both age groups (p < 0.001 in both groups at both time points). With the Orbscan IIz, a significant decrease in ACD was detected at 1 month after Lasik in those ≤ 40 years (p = 0.012) but not at 3 months post-operatively (p = 0.291). In those > than 40 years, a significant increase in ACD was detected at 1 month after Lasik (p < 0.001) but not at 3 months post-operatively (p = 0.557).

Conclusions:

ACD decreased significantly after Lasik in all patients at all time points with IOL master measurements. ACD decreased significantly in younger patients (≤ 40 years) but increased significantly in older patients (> 40 years) 1 month after Lasik with Orbscan IIz measurements. After Lasik, age influences ACD measurements made with the Orbscan IIz in the early post-operative period. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
