Functional comparison of the performance of a new biometry instrument

Purpose:

To assess the accuracy, reproducibility and ergonomics of using a new all-in-one optical coherence biometry device (Aladdin, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan) compared with outcomes from devices already established in use.

Setting:

Optegra Eye Sciences, Optegra UK.

Methods:

Retrospective agreement analysis of measurements of axial length, anterior chamber depth (ACD) and keratometry obtained on the same group of eyes (n = 48) using two instruments; the Topcon Aladdin and the Zeiss IOLMaster. A Bland-Altman method was used in order to investigate the limits of agreement.

Results:

For axial length, the mean arithmetic difference (95%CI) between measurements was 0.011±0.020mm (0.017 to 0.004mm). Limits of agreement were -0.0292 to 0.0503 mm. For ACD, the mean arithmetic difference (95%CI) between measurements was -0.025±0.080mm (0.002 to 0.052mm). Limits of agreement were -0.1816 to 0.1319 mm. For keratometric astigmatism, the mean arithmetic difference (95%CI) between measurements was 0.01±0.25mm (-0.077 to 0.093mm). Limits of agreement were -0.4912 to 0.5074 mm. There were no statistically or clinically significant differences obtained for any parameter.

Conclusions:

Agreement has long been established between applanation ultrasonography and optical methods, and this study suggests agreement between a new optical biometer and an established standard to within the limits of clinical significance. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
