Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the effectiveness of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implantation in the treatment of glaucoma patients (own data analysis).
Setting:
District General Hospital, Ophthalmology Department, Wolomin, Poland
Methods:
23 eyes of 22 patients were assessed (11 women and 11 men). All patients were at the age from 31 to 89.
All surgeries were performed at the Ophthalmology Department, District General Hospital in Wolomin.
The treatment took place between 6.04.2010 and 31.01.2014.
Patients with the range of IOP between 25 to 89 mmHg were included in the treatment with Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implantation. The valve implantations were performed due to high intraocular pressure that couldn't be managed by any other treatment. The valve has been implanted in fakic eyes or in pseudofakic eyes.
The surgery was performed under local anaesthesia with anaesthetic premedication. Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (type FP7) was implanted in the supero-temporal quadrant of the eye. The Nylon 9.0 suture was used to fix Ahmed Glaucoma Valve to sclera and single silk suture was used to close the conjunctiva. After the surgery the antibiotic, steroids and NSAiD eye drops were used.
Results:
The VA test, IOP check and anterior and posterior segment examination were performed before and after the surgery. Postoperative examination was performed between 7 and 14 days after the treatment. The next follow up was conducted after 2 weeks. The next step was to arrange individual follow up assessments. Appointments were scheduled at the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department.
The effectiveness of the treatment was assessed within 4 to 36 months post operation.
All patients with the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve had decrease of IOP.
Conclusions:
The Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implantation proves to be an effective treatment for glaucoma. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
