Comparison of ICare© rebound tonometer with Goldmann applanation tonometer in healthy adult subjects

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements provided by Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT) and ICare© rebound tonometer in healthy adult subjects and to assess the influence of central corneal thickness (CCT)

Setting:

Kafkas University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Kars, Turkey

Methods:

This prospective, randomized study includes 131 right eyes of 131 adult volunteers (63 females, 68 males) without any ocular pathology. All subjects' IOP readings were taken by ICare before topical anesthetic and by GAT after topical proparacaine with 15 minutes interval between readings.

Results:

After the measurements taken by ICare and GAT, the mean corrected IOP values were 18.19±4.42 ve 18.56±4.42 mmHg, respectively. The differences between corresponding measures (ICare value-GAT value) had a mean of 0.37±2.89Hg, a 95% confidence interval of -5.3 to 6.0 mmHg (p<0.001). ICare has a sensitivity of 58.1% and a specificity of 84.1%.

Conclusions:

ICare measurements are significantly higher for healthy individuals compared to GAT. Icare measurements are influenced by CCT, it should be combined by pacymetric evaluation. Because of the moderate correlation, sensitivity and higher specificity detected between ICare and GAT, ICare may be adequate to be a screening test for healthy individuals. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
