Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the Goldman appanation tonometer (GAT) and noncontact tonometer Corvis ST (CST) in the measure of the intraocular pressure. The CST is a newly development tonometer which values are based in the response to corneal deformation after an air pulse. A secondary objective was to evaluate the agreement between these tonometers.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Q Vision, Vithas Vírgen del Mar Hospital, Almería (Spain).

Methods:

This is a prospective study in which we included 30 patients (60 eyes). IOP measurements were obtained with the CST and TAG by two experienced physicians. IOP values were compared.

Results:

IOP measurements showed no statistically significant differences between both tonometers (p<0.0001). Linear intraclass correlation of both methods is 0.985 with confidence interval of 95% (0.9316 to 0.9749). Bland- Altman method don´t demonstrate differences in tendency to overestimation or underestimation by one of these methods.

Conclusions:

The CST provides an alternative method for measuring IOP with the same reproducibility of TAG. An accurate assessment of PIO is extremely important for the diagnosis and decision of glaucomatous patients. Retardment in detection and treatment of elevated IOP in these eyes can cause vision problemsfor the damage of the optic nerve and visual field deterioration. In this study, the results of a new non-contact tonometer Corvis ST with the traditional Goldman applanation tonometry were compared. The presented data shows no statistically significant difference in the IOP values between two devices studies with a larger number of patients and correlating many kinds of ocular pathology are needed.
