Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the correlation between optic nerve head retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) layer changes in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography(OCT).
Setting:
This was ananalyticobservational cross sectional clinical study. The study was carried out between October 2012 and April 2013 at Cairo University Hospital
Methods:
The study is a cross sectional observationalclinical trial study in which patients diagnosed with POAG were included. Patients with history of any ocular diseases or trauma were excluded. All patients were subjected to full ophthalmic examinations and SD-OCT evaluation and analysis (correlation) of RNFL parameters and GCC parameters.
Results:
Thirty eight eyes of 38 patients with POAG were included with a mean age of 58.18±7.89 yearsand a male to female ratio 3:2. The mean IOP,C/D area ratio, RNFL and GCC thickness were 23.03±7.36 mmHg,0.86±0.13, 80.71±18.24 µ, and80.91±16.24 µ, respectively. There was a positive statistical significant correlation of high probability between the patients' average GCC thickness and the average total , superior, inferior, temporal half, and temporal quadrant RNFL thickness. (P < 0.001) The superior and inferior average GCC thickness each showed a positive correlation withaverage total, superior, and inferior RNFL thickness. (P Value<0.001).
Conclusions:
SD-OCT can detect early glaucomatous changes affecting the RNFL and the retinal ganglion cells. There is a strong positive correlation between the RNFL thickness and the GCC thickness in patients with POAG. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
