First experiences with the LENTIS laser lens at the Augenklinik Bellevue in Kiel, Germany

Purpose:

Cataract surgery using the Femto Laser Technology (FLACS) aims to be the next step in surgery concerning safety, predictability and efficacy. In particular, the size of the Rhexis through the good predictability of the size and centering, is of great importance. Regarding the lens designs, thereby resulting new opportunities. A first step in the development represents i.a. the LENTIS Laser Lens of Oculentis. This has a special haptic system which allows additionally clamp the lens in the rhexis. The authors demonstrate their first clinical experience with this lens in relation to the implantation and the early postoperative phase.

Augenklinik Bellevue in Kiel/Germany

Methods:

With the LENSAR Femto Laser a rhexis with a diameter of 4,8mm has been produced and centered at the center of the pupil. Femto Laser treatment was performed by one surgeon. Phacoemulsification was performed with the OS3 phaco system (Oertli, Switzerland). The implantation occurs using an injector through a 2.2mm incision. The optical diameter is 5.7 mm and the overall diameter of 10.5mm. The lens has an aspheric design and consists of a hydraulic Smart Material with 25% water content.

Results:

In the first implantation, there were no intraoperative complications. Particular there was no tearing of the rhexis. Clipping the 4 additional haptics in the rhexis requires after a short intra-operative learning curve minimal additional time. Before clipping in the rhexis the removal of viscoelastic behind the Femto lens is important. The lens centered in all cases on the rhexis. Postoperative there were no lens-related complications.

Conclusions:

The results are promising in terms of the safety and efficacy of the new femto lens. The centering of the lens was always on the planned rhexis and was independent of influences of the capsular bag in early postoperative period. For the full assessment of this the new lens technology, long-term observations are essential, maybe resulting in other options for secondary attachment of additive artificial lenses.
