Dice vs mixed (chops and cylinders) lens fragmentation patterns in femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcome, central corneal thickness and cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) after two different fragmentation patterns by means of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS).

Setting:

Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine and Science of Ageing, University 'G. d'Annunzio' of Chieti-Pescara, Italy

Methods:

Sixty eyes of 60 patients that underwent FLACS were randomized in two groups: dice lens fragmentation pattern (group 1; 30 eyes) and mixed (chop and cylinders) lens fragmentation pattern (group 2; 30 eyes).

Results:

There were no significant between-group differences in uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity during the3-month follow up. At 7 and 30 days after surgery a lower increase of central corneal thickness was observed in group 1 compared to group 2 (p<0.05) with no significant differences at 90 days after surgery. Central endothelial cell loss was lower in group 1 compared to group 2 at 90 days. Cumulative dissipated energy was significantly lower in group 1 compared to group 2 (p<0.05; 4.01 ±0.77 and 12.57±2.24, respectively).

Conclusions:

Both lens fragmentation patterns were effective in nucleus disassembly. Nevertheless, dice pattern required a lower amount of CDE, thus inducing lower central endothelial cell loss and lower increase of central corneal thickness. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
