Analysis of the results with 90 micron thin femtosecond laser flaps

Purpose:

The intent of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the performance of 90 micron femtosecond laser flaps  which included the feasibility of treating thin corneas or eyes with high myopic refractive errors and achieved the  desired refractive result addressing   all the safety parameters

Setting:

The Eye Foundation Coimbatore, India

Methods:

107 eyes of 54 patients, age group ranging 14 to 43 years were retrospectively analysed, in the period Oct 2011 to March 2012, with a follow up of 6 months. All eyes underwent Intralase flap creation with 90 µ flaps and refractive ablation provided with the EX500 Wavelight Laser System. All eyes had a stable topography and hysteresis preoperatively. The refractive error ranged from -0.50Dsph to -12.25Dsp and the astigmatism ranged from-0.25Dcyl to -2.75 Dcyl. The preop CCT values ranged from 483 to 579 microns. The predictability of the flap thickness, change in the Q values, the statistical significance of planned versus achieved residual bed and the visual outcomes were measured.

Results:

Residual refractive error ranged from -0.12 to -1.0 Dsph eq in 8 eyes which was gratifying keeping in mind the refractive range treated .91.58 % of eyes had maintained BSCVA and 8.42 % of eyes gained one line of BSCVA.  Efficacy of the procedure indicates that 86 % had the desired visual results and 7.47 % had better than desired visual result. 83.2 % had flaps within 10 micron predictability and 95.05% had predictable residual beds.  Three eyes had suction losses intraop which were completed uneventfully in the same sitting. 2 eyes had gas bubble in the AC and one small linear flap tear uneventfully treated. None of the eyes had any stromal haze or VBH.

Conclusions:

90 micron Intralase flaps are safe and predictable options when treating thinner corneas or eyes with higher myopic refractive errors with stable visual outcomes  with  acceptable safety parameters maintained. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
