Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the reliability of ROPLAS with Sac syringing in patients scheduled to undergo cataract surgery in a community setting
Setting:
Community setting
Methods:
All the patients who came for community setup camp were initially examined by 8 ophthalmologist in the outpatient department. A history of complaints related to lacrimal system was obtained from each patient. Out of around 5000 OPD patients 1350 had cataract. All patients with Cataract under went ROPLAS and NLD sac syringing .
Results:
A total 1255 ROPLAS negative patients. Regurgitation( Syringing positive ) from opposite or same punctum was seen in 45 patients. After subjecting these patients to syringing we were able to detect (11 patients ) 0.87% pus positive patients.
Conclusions:
Our study indicates that even if ROPLAS is done by a trained optometrist or ophthalmologist it is possible to miss the patients with NLD block. ROPLAS is not as safe and effective method as syringing in community setting. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
