Results of collagen cross-linking with riboflavin in paediatric patients with progressive keratoconus

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To assess the safety and efficacy of Corneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (CXL) using ultraviolet-A light in Children of 9-16 years of age with progressive keratoconus.

Setting:

Centre For Sight

Methods:

It was a retrospective case series of 25 eyes of 15 children with progressive keratoconus aged between 9-16 years. Mean follow up was 24.57 months (range 1 to 3 years). 6 out of 15 (40%) children had Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) associated keratoconus.

Results:

We had gratifying results in most of our patients. Mean pre-operative keratometry was 51.96 + 5.75 D, whereas which reduced to 48.73 + 3.83 D. Improvement in BCVA by one line or more was noted in all (100%) eyes at the last follow up. Mean pre-op aberration coefficient was 2.6+/-0.96 which reduced to 2.42+/-0.92 post operatively. There were no complications noted in our series except for mild haze and minimal scarring post-op which had no impact on BCVA

Conclusions:

Our study concluded that Collagen Cross Linking with Riboflavin is a safe and effective procedure in children with progressive keratoconus. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
