Long-term results of corneal collagen cross-linking for progressive keratoconus

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate the long-term results of corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in patients with progressive keratoconus.

Setting:

Purpan hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Toulouse, France

Methods:

Retrospective consecutive, non-comparative, case series analysis of 350 eyes that have undergone CXL for progressive keratoconus. CXL was performed by instilling riboflavin 0.1% solution containing 20% dextran for 30 minutes before and during the 30 minutes of ultraviolet A irradiation (3 mW/cm2). Follow-up examinations were arranged at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 months. Patients were tested for uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and maximum simulated keratometry value (Kmax).

Results:

Kmax flattened by -0.51±0.23 D, -0.72±0.21 D, -0.83±0.19 D, -0,78±0.24 D, -0,85±0.25 D, and -0,83±0.19 D at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 months, respectively (all p <0.001). Both UCVA (-0.09±0.08 logMAR; p <0.05) and BSCVA (-0.07±0.06 logMAR; p <0.05) improved at 36 months.

Conclusions:

CXL is an efficient procedure to stabilize progressive keratoconus with initial Kmax decrease during the first 2 years. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
