Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine and compare the corneal biomechanical properties between eyes with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and eyes with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Republican Research Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology, Gomel, Belarus

Methods:

A prospective randomized study of 73 patients with glaucoma was performed between Feb and Sept 2013. POAG and NTG patients had assessment of their corneal biomechanical properties - corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF). Exclusion criteria: previous intraocular surgery, corneal pathology and inflammatory connective tissue disease. If both eyes were eligible, then the right eye was used for analysis.

Results:

52% of patients were female, 48% were male, the average age was 66.9±6.1 years. Thirty three had NTG, whereas 40 had POAG. There was a statistically significant difference in mean CH (NTG: 9.5±0.9 mm Hg; POAG: 8.9±0.4 mm Hg; p=0.04), but not in mean CRF (NTG: 10.0±0.8; POAG: 10.5±1.0; p>0.05). The highest recorded intraocular pressure (IOP) had statistically significant correlations with higher CRF and lower CH.

Conclusions:

There was a statistically significant difference in the mean CH between NTG and POAG. The highest recorded IOP was significantly correlated with lower CH and higher CRF. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
