Scheimpflug imaging parameters in keratoconus patients without treatment: 2 year follow-up

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate Scheimpflug imaging parameters and demographic information in patients with keratoconus diagnosis, that did not have any treatment during a follow up of 2 years.

Methods:
This retrospective study included 19 eyes with keratoconus diagnosis that didn't have any treatment during 2 years follow up period. Demographic data, visual acuity, manifest refraction and Scheimpflug imaging parameters using the Galilei ( Ziemer Ophthalmic System AG) were compared between first visit and the following visits ( 1 and 2 years). The eyes were grouped in three groups: Group A, were eyes that showed increase in the maximum keratometry values bigger than 1 Diopter (D) in one year, group B eyes that showed decrease in maximum keratometry of 1 D or more and group C eyes that did not showed changes in keratometry or changes were lower than 1 D in 1 year.
Results:
Group A showed an increase in maximum keratometry of 1.9D at 2 years of follow up (p=0.03); there was not statistically significant difference in the pachymetry during the follow up (p = 0.34); maximum posterior elevation showed a mean increase of 5.7 um (Standard deviation [DS]= 7.68) at 2 years of follow up (p = 0.04). Group B showed a mean decrease in maximum keratometry of 1.2 D (DS= 1.1D) at 2 years of follow up (p= 0.02). Group C showed mean change on maximum keratometry of 0.4D (p=0.07). There was not statistically significant difference on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) during the follow up in all groups. There was statistically significant difference between group A and B in terms of age (p < .0001)
Conclusions:
Untreated keratoconus can show different evolution. The most significant change on tomographic parameters in keratoconus progression was the maximum keratometry values followed by posterior elevation values. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
