Abstract Details
Purpose:
Evaluate the corneal biomechanical properties and central corneal thickness in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Setting:
The study group was composed of 60 eyes from 30 patients healthy control subjects and 60 eyes from 30 diabetic subjects.
Methods:
Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were measured with the ocular response analyser (ORA).Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured with an ultrasonic pachymeter attached to the ORA.
Results:
CH and CRF were found to be significantly higher in diabetic pacients whem compared with healthy control subjects (10,18+/-1,6mmhg vs 9,49+/-1,8mmhg and 10,9+/-1,7mmhg vs 9,8+/-1,2mmhg; P=0.001). Mean CCT was significantly higher in diabetic pacients (553,2micras) than in healthy control subjects (538,8micras).
Conclusions:
Diabetes affects corneal biomechanics and results in higher CH and CRF values than those in healthy control subjects. Diabetic patients had an increased CCT when compared with normal eyes. These values should be taken into account when measuring IOP values in pacients with diabetes mellitus. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
