Ametropia correction after intrastromal corneal ring segment explantation in eyes with keratoconus

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate visual, refractive outcomes of intrastromal ring (MyoRing, DIOPTEX GmBH, Linz, Austria) implantation after previous intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) explantation for unsufficient vusial outcome in eyes with keratoconus.

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute, Ufa, Russia.

Methods:

MyoRings were implanted in 8 patients (8 eyes) with progressive keratoconus, who had undergone ICRS implantation previously to manage corneal irregularity. Initially ICRS were explanted due to segment removal. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), keratometry ( K) were evaluated.

Results:

UCVA increased from 0,09±0,15 to 0,1±0,23, max K value reduced from 60,07±0,08 D to 57,21±0,25 D one month after ICRS implantation. Episode of protrusion occurred in the following 4-6 months, and segment was removed. UCVA was 0,2±0,17, BCVA was 0,3±0,05, max K value became 60,26±0.24 after removal. It was decided to implant MyoRing. After the MyoRing implantation UCVA was 0,6±0,12, BCVA was 0,7±0,25,max K value was 47,18 D±0,07.

Conclusions:

Visual and refractive improvements were achieved by intrastromal corneal MyoRing implantation after previous ISRC protrusion in eyes with keratoconus. Myoring implantation showed to be a readjustable surgical procedure for keratoconus treatment after extrusion. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
