Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the clinical outcome Conjunctival autografting with vicryl suture, fibrin glue and no glue no sutures for pterygium surgery.
Setting:
Divyadrishti eye centre, Patna ,India
Methods:
Thirty six eyes of 36 patients were included in this study. All eyes had primary pterygia and were treated with limbal conjunctival autografting after pterygium resection. Tissue glue was used to attach the limbal conjunctival autograft in 12 eyes and vicryl sutures in 12 eyes, while no suture no glue strategy was used for next 12 patients. Patients were followed for 6 months. Clinical examination was performed in all groups on postoperative days 1, 15, and 45. Main outcome measures were patient comfort, graft success, complications, and recurrence of pterygium.
Results:
Patient comfort was higher in the no suture no glue group followed closely by glue group than the vicryl suture group. Graft displacement occurred in 1 patient with grafting with no suture no glue while all grafts were intact in rest two groups during the follow-up period. No recurrence was observed during the 6-month follow-up in all the groups.. The glue was seen under the conjunctiva on the first postoperative day and was not seen on days 15 and 45.graft retraction was observed in 10 patients on day 1 and 15 and grafts were well taken and in place in all the patients in no suture no glue group.
Conclusions:
Our results showed that limbal conjunctival autografting is an effective surgical technique for the treatment of pterygium, and autologous fibrin in blood is a useful alternative method for graft fixation ,apart from tissue glue and vicryl suture. No glue no suture decreases patient symptoms during the postoperative period after pterygium surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
