Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the outcomes of 2 models of intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) implantation to correct keratoconus using the femtosecond technology.
Setting:
Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt
Methods:
This study evaluated eyes with keratoconus that had implantation of Kerarings ICRS (Group 1) or Intacs SK ICRS (Group 2). The corneal tunnels were created with femtosecond (FS) laser. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, refraction, keratometry (K) readings, and complications in the 2 groups were compared.
Results:
Group 1 comprised 20 eyes and Group 2 another 20 eyes. The postoperative increase in UDVA and CDVA was statistically significant in both groups (P<.05). There were no significant differences between the 2 groups regarding the change of UDVA, CDVA, refractive error reduction (P>.05). The mean reduction in maximum K was statistically significantly greater in Group 1.
Conclusions:
Both Kerarings ICRS and Intacs SK are effective and safe in correction of keratoconus; the Keraring ICRS led to greater reduction in the maximum K value. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
