Efficacy of intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation with femtosecond laser technology for keratoconus treatment

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of the femtosecond intrastromal corneal ring segments implantation technique and to report the results of first 30 eyes treated for moderate and severe keratoconus.

Methods:
30 eyes of 27 patients with clinically and topographically verified
Keratoconus were included in the study. Intrastromal corneal ring segments were implanted following tunnel creation by femtosecond laser VisuMax (Carl Zeiss Meditec). In 4 eyes a single 210° Keraring segment has been implanted, 10 eyes received double segments (90° 120° 160°). The deepness of tunnels were 80 % of corneal thickness in 5 or 6 mm diameter. The main outcome measures included improvement in visual acuity, subjective refractive error and keratometry values.
Results:
Mean age of patients was 30. 5 ± 5.4 years. No complication has occured during
femtosecond laser and implantation stages of the operation. Mean UCVA has
increased from 0.15 ± 0.09 ( 0.05-0.6) preoperatively to 0.30 ± 0.19 (0.1-0.8) at 6th
postoperative month. Mean BCVA increased from 0.2 ± 1.41 ( 0.16-0.8) preoperatively to 0.4 ± 2.26 (0.2-1.0) at 6th postoperative month. The corneal astigmatism was reducing from 3.75±1.72 (1.0±6.7) to 2.3 ± 1.9 (1.0±4.0).
Conclusions:
Femtosecond laser assisted intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation
(Keraring) is a safe and effective method for the correction of keratoconus. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
