Expulsive haemorrhage during aphakic PKP: a dramatic rescue (a case study)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

A case study of a dramatic rescue during an Aphakic penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) associated with an expulsive haemorrhage.

Setting:

During a standard PKP procedure, expulsive haemorrhage occurred causing a sudden and unexpected deviation from the normal procedure.

Methods:

A novel technique, involving an incision in the pars plana was applied during this crisis situation in order to save the patient's eye. This facilitated drainage of the acute haemorrhage and prevented expulsion of the choroid, retina and vitreous.

Results:

Saving the choroid, retina and vitreous and therefore the eye was achieved as a result of the surgical intervention. Within a week the choroid and retina was in back normal anatomical position.

Conclusions:

Improvisation should never be underestimated in an emergency. In this case study, a novel technique saved a patient's eye. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
