Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report 5 cases of tectonic lamellar transplantation for corneal thinning and perforations.To report 5 cases of tectonic lamellar transplantation for corneal thinning and perforations.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Lublin, Poland
Methods:
Four tectonic lamellar grafts of different shape were performed in patients with non-traumatic perforation and coexisting immunological disorders. Procedure: tissues around the perforation area were carefully peeled away using a Crescent blade. Lamellar graft was prepared by manual dissection of the donors cornea. Different shape of graft was trephined (circular, boat-shaped, U-shaped) and secured with non-absorbable single sutures. The parameters evaluated were visual acuity, size and shape of graft, postoperative outcome, and complications.
Results:
In postoperative period the cornea remained transparent and restored the normal thickness. There were no complications such as graft rejection, corneal melting or perforation. In all patients visual acuity improved. Anatomical success was achieved in all cases.
Conclusions:
Lamellar graft is a useful therapeutic option in selected cases of corneal perforations. It restores the integrity of the eye giving time to introduce general treatment of immunological disorder. Optical and anatomic rehabilitation is acceptable. In some cases further full-thickness keratoplasty to fully restore vision might be needed. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
