30 corneal ectasias post-LASIK treated by intrastromal ring implanted by mechanic technique: results and evolution

Purpose:

The objective of this study is to describe the surgery results and evolution after implantation of intracorneal rings, all of them by mechanism implant.

Setting:

Clínica Baviera, Hospital Virgen del Rocío, Sevilla, Spain.

Methods:

We describe a retrospective analyse on thirty eyes with corneal ectasia post LASIK. A complete exploration of the eye was made before and after surgery and it included: uncorrected visual acuity (UVCA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), subjective refraction, corneal topography, pachimetry, Slim lamp exploration, tonometry, funduscoppy and some of them coma aberration or another hight orden aberrations.

Results:

Before surgery the mean UCVA 0,33 and with correction 0,36. Corneal mean astigmatism before surgery was -3,3D, mean pachimetry was 475 micras. Different types of rings were implanted: 5 or 6 optic zone, 120 - 160 degrees, and 150-300 micras in depending on the ectasia patrón or evolution. Intraoperative complications are described only in a few cases. After surgery we observe an improve of the visual aquity with correction compared with the VA without it. The topography show a regularization of the optic zone in the most of cases and the high order aberrations were down.

Conclusions:

Corneal rings are a effective and safety technique. The mechanic implant is possible with a minimal risk of complications. Most of patients improve their BCVA and their quality of life. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
