Comparison of topographic corneal changes in vernal keratoconjunctivitis and healthy eyes

Purpose:

To compare the topographic corneal changes in eyes with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and healty control group.

Setting:

Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic

Methods:

Fourty eyes of twenty patients with active VKC and fourty eyes of twenty healthy patients were included in this study. Age, gender, age at onset of symptoms, atopic disease, and duration of the VKC symptoms were recorded. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including best-corrected visual acuity and slit- lamp biomicroscopy. Patients were examined with the Sirius® (Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Florence, Italy) for corneal topography by one examiner.

Results:

The type of VKC was palpebral in 16 eyes (40 %), limbal in 14 eyes (35 %), and mixed in 10 eyes (25 %). In four eyes (10 %) keratoconus (KCN) was detected using slit-lamp biomicrocopy in VKC group. There were no statistically difference between the groups for age and gender (p˃0.05). Mean astigmatism, thickness at the thinnest location, thickness at the apex of the cornea, the difference in the thickness between the apex and the thinnest location, the mean anterior and posterior elevation peak and KCN index was significantly different between the two groups (p<0.05). In VKC group, KCN was detected in 4 eyes (10%), and subclinic KCN was detected in 10 eyes (25 %) by using corneal topography. There was no patient detected as KCN or subclinic KCN in the control group.

Conclusions:

KCN and subclinic KCN was diagnosed more frequently in eyes with VKC compared to the healty eyes. In patients with VKC, corneal topography analysis is important for early diagnosis of KCN. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
