Ocular aberrations in early subclinical keratoconus: is there any meaning?

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare ocular higher order aberrations (HOA) between normal and early subclinical keratoconic (SKC) eyes.
Setting:
Dunya Eye Hospital, Atakoy-Istanbul/ Turkey
Methods:
In this cross-sectional comparative study 38 SKC eyes and 39 normal myopic and/or myopic astigmatic eyes were included. In each eye, we did all ocular examinations and corneal topography (Orbscan II) and aberrometry (iDesign) and we compared the ocular aberrations.
Results:
In SKC group there were 13 male, 8 female patients and the mean age was 33,7 (23-50) and in control group there were 15 male, 5 female patients and the mean age was 30,1 (19-45).The groups had similar refractive values.There were not statistically significant differences in all zernike coefficients between the two groups. Only root mean square (RMS) value was significantly higher in SKC group(p=0,02). Mean RMS of SKC was 0,44±0,20 (0,19-0,95) and the mean RMS of control group was 0,34±0,14(0,15-0,78).
Conclusions:
While evaluating the patients for excimer laser surgery, we may include the RMS value as a risk factor for keratoconus. If the RMS value is higher than 0.4, it's better to be careful about keratoconus. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
