Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the microbial contamination in hospital-prepared fortified antibiotics and steroids in Phramongkutklao hospital

Setting:

Prospective non-comparative experimental study

Methods:

The non-preservative eye drops composed of 150 samples of 5 ophthalmic preparations (30 samples per each solution) including 4 samples of non-preservative fortified antibiotics (Vancomycin, Cefazolin, Ceftazidime, Amikacin), one sample of steroid (Methylprednisolone). All of the eye drops were stored at room temperature and received the imitative situation of usage by exposure to the outside and opened the bottle 6 times per day. Thirty samples of each preparation were collected at day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 for identified microbial contamination

Results:

The mean temperature was 30.73 oC ± 0.92 (mean ± SD) and mean relative humidity was 63.67% ± 4.51 (mean ± SD). The cultures were no growth in all specimens of antibiotic eye drops of fortified vancomycin, fortified cefazolin, fortified ceftazidime, fortified amikacin and all specimens of steroid eye drops of 1%methylprednisolone at day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28

Conclusions:

Topical preservative free eye drops can be kept in room temperature without contamination for 4 weeks period under a strict protocol of preparation. An further study of stability of preservative free eye drops stored in room temperature is needed FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
