Keratoconus in pediatric age group: outstanding findings

Purpose:
To present corneal findings of ten children with unsatisfactory Best Corrected Vision in both eyes
Setting:
Cairo, Egypt
Methods:
Advanced diagnostic tools for evaluation of corneal integrity, made the early diagnosis of keratoconus in pediatric age group possible. Unexplained Best Corrected vision in that group is getting clarified using that technology. Full ophthalmic examination including best spectacle corrected visual acuity, fundus examination, corneal examination, corneal pachymetry and Schimpflug imaging of the cornea of both eyes of ten children (age range 4-12 years) was done
Results:
Keratometric power of the twelve corneas ranged between 42.65 - 50.17 Diopters (average 46.37 D), with average Keratometric reading ranging between 44.62 Diopters and 48.14 Diopters (average 46.29) was reported. Central corneal thickness ranged from 450 microns to 491 microns (average 471.25 microns). Best Spectacle corrected vision was 6/9 in all eyes with refraction ranging from -1.75 D to -4.75 D
Conclusions:
This is a detailed evaluation of six children that complained of unsatisfactory quality vision in both eyes and revealed the diagnosis of suspicious bilateral keratoconus, which is an usual finding in that age group. This should raise the attention of Ophthalmologists to that pathology known to commonly present at puberty and to cautiously consider its ccurance in pediatric age-group FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
