Abstract Details

Purpose:

To discuss the use of the aphakic irisfixation IOLs. Several indications are possible: preoperative such as post traumatic or unusual situations (Marfan syndrome, iris deformation, uncomplete aniridia, congenital cataract), peroperative (cataract surgery with posterior capsular tear) or postoperative (piggyback solution).

Setting:

St. Godfriedstraat 8, 3800 Sint-Truiden, Belgium

Methods:

We studied 230 cases over the past 25 years. Visual acuity, endothelial cell count, refraction and contrast sensitivity were measured.

Results:

The results obtained with the aphakic irisfixation lens were good to excellent. Nevertheless the visual acuity after corneal grafts (corneal decompensation due to angle supported lenses) was unsatisfactory to moderate.

Conclusions:

Aphakic irisfixation IOL is an excellent option for pre-, per- and postoperative situations. Patients have an overall good satisfaction rate.
