Transscleral fixation of intraocular lens with a sclera-sutureless intrascleral pocket technique

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To present the intrascleral pocket procedure for transscleral fixation (TF) of the intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with aphakia.

Setting:

Gyeongsang university hospital at Jinju , South Korea

Methods:

Retrospective. A 2 mm-sized intrascleral pocket was created by lamellar dissection using a crescent blade 2 mm behind the limbus without conjunctival dissection. A 3-piece fordable acrylic IOL was inserted through 2.8 mm clear corneal incision (CCI), and then ends of haptics were exteriorized through CCI. Prolene sutures for each ends were tied in the intrascleral pocket bed, and suture ends were left long and were buried under flaps to avoid exposure. Twenty eyes of 20 patients who had received TF with this technique were retrospectively reviewed.

Results:

During at least eight months postoperative follow-up period, only one case of flap injury needed conjunctival suturing. All of 20 eyes showed improvement of postoperative best corrected visual acuity compared to preoperative values. There were no major complications, such as endophthalmitis, knot exposure, and IOL dislocation.

Conclusions:

The intrascleral pocket procedure is simple, quick, and safe technique for avoiding exposure of suture and conjunctival injury in transscleral IOL fixation. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
