Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the paper is to determine the frequency of occurrence of PVD after uncomplicated phacoemulsification, and the significance of OCT in detecting early changes on the vitreo-retinal interface as well.
Setting:
Examination was conducted at the Ophthalmology Clinic, Clinical Center Niš and in the 'Eye Vision Center Maja' - Niš.
Methods:
The study enrolled 57 eyes in 57 patients aged 50 to 70 years. They underwent uncomplicated phacoemuslification with intraocular lens implantation in the period from November 2011 to June 2013. Inclusion criteria were: BCVA over 0.1, ocular axial length 22-25mm, the absence of PVD or the presence of early PVD, the absence of peripheral fundus degenerative changes, and the absence of other ocular diseases. Optical coherence tomography and ultrasound were performed before and 1, 3 and 6 months after the intervention. The impact of ultrasound time (UST) and age of patients on PVD occurrence were also tested.
Results:
Out of 57 patients preoperatively, 28 had signs of early PVD, while 29 presented with no changes on the vitreo-retinal interface. There were 9 patients (31.03%) with vitreous body detachment one month after uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Three of them developed complete detachment (10.34%),and 6 patients (20.69%) presented with partial detachment. After 3 months the overall number of patients with PVD was 13 (44.82%), and after 6 months 18 (62.07%). Among the patients who had signs of PVD preoperatively, the progression was recorded in 72.3 % of cases.
Conclusions:
Posterior vitreous detachment after uncomplicated phacoemulsification is a relatively common condition. OCT is a very important method in detecting early changes on vitreo-retinal interface. The results obtained confirm that this technique is a referential one with high sensitivity for detecting postoperative PVD in comparison to ocular ultrasound results. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
