Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to analyze high-order aberrations (HOA) after implantation of four different aspherical intraocular lenses (AIOLs).

Setting:

A total of 160 eyes of 113 patients were enrolled in this prospective, single-center study (mean age: 73.6 +/- 8.8).

Methods:

The patients with cataract underwent phacoemulsification. The following lenses were implanted: Tecnis ZCB00 (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA, n=40, aberration-corrected (-0.27µm)), CT Asphina 409M (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany, n=40, aberration free), Akreos AO MI-60 (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY n=40, aberration free) and Hoya iSert 251 (HOYA, Tokio, n=40, aberration-corrected (-0.18µm)). At postoperative follow-up visits after 1 month, pupil dilation was achieved and aberrometry was performed using an iTrace aberrometer with a pupil scan size of 5.0mm. The difference among the groups was evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results:

The root mean square (RMS) of total ocular high-order aberrations showed no statistically significant difference between the four AIOLs (p=0.316): Tecnis (0.453 +/- 0.232µm), Asphina (0.394 +/- 0.164µm), MI-60 (0.407 +/- 0.173µm) and Hoya (0.462 +/- 0.200µm). With regard to Trefoil (p=0.515) and best visual acuity (BCVA, p=0.935) there was no statistically significant difference between the four groups. Spherical Aberration (p<0.001) and Coma (p=0.018) demonstrated a significant difference between the AIOLs: The Tecnis IOL showed the lowest Spherical Aberration (-0.018 +/- 0.102µm) closely followed by the Hoya IOL (0.060 +/- 0.104µm) and the Tecnis IOL demonstrated the highest Coma (0.270 +/- 0.162µm).

Conclusions:

The aspheric Tecnis and Hoya IOL seem to most effectively correct Spherical Aberration. Nevertheless the Tecnis group showed the highest Coma in comparison to the three other AIOLs. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
